The purpose of a tent is not to keep you warm. It s to shelter you from rain, snow, and wind. A tent with a rain fly will preserve a temperature a few degrees warmer than the outside and that's not enough to keep you warm in -20 degree Fahrenheit weather. What keeps you warm in those conditions is clothing a sleeping bag and other humans or dogs or cats. Cloth or down barriers need to be next to your skin not three feet away on a tent wall. If you have correct clothing and gear you will be toasty warm at any temperature as long as you are dry. The main value of a sturdy tent is to protect you during very very bad weather. When the wind is blowing 80 miles an hour and you are inside a high-quality mountain tent…you will have something that no other piece of equipment can offer you…peace of mind. The weather is outside and you are snug as a bug inside.
