The first thing is to find a location that allows dogs. Not every campsite is dog friendly, but a lot of them are. In fact, we've done the heavy lifting for you--here are numerous campgrounds that allow dogs. Also, each campsite may have numerous different rules regarding your dog, so make sure you know these rules and are prepared to follow them.

Second thing is having control of your dog. For some of us, our dog listens to our every word, without hesitation. For others, we need different types of control. A leash and a harness maybe. You need to have control of your dog for two reasons; for the dog's safety, and people's safety. Just because you are at a dog friendly campsite, does not mean everyone is required to love dogs, let alone your dog. Having control of your dog will make sure no one is annoyed or feels threatened by your dog, which makes sure that everyone is having a good time. Another reason for having control of your dog is because nature can be a scary place. Your dog is probably used to being the biggest animal around. But in nature, that will not be the case. If your dog is the type to chase a rabbit, to not return to you immediately, then a leash is a must. After all, the woods have rabbits, but also bears.

Third thing is knowing your animal. Your dog does not need to be a young, sculpted pup to go camping. If your dog is old, out of shape, or just in general not very active, you must have a schedule while camping that reflects that. Don't go on a very long hike with a dog that cannot handle it safely. Making sure your dog enjoys camping will ensure that you enjoy it as well.

The final thing is to make sure you are prepared before you leave. You must make sure you have enough food and water for your dog, and a little bit extra just in case. You have to make sure your dog is up to date on his or hers vaccinations and shots. Another thing, you have to make sure that your dog has tags with current information just in case they get lost and someone needs to contact you. It would be ideal if you could make two tags, one with your campsite information, and the other with your regular information. The last thing is to make sure you have an extra leash and collar. Even if you often don't have your dog leashed, having one handy will make sure that you'll be prepared for anything no matter what happens.
